first baby buys!
today we bought a dresser/changing table! it was totally out of the blue, but we found a cute, retro lowboy at a vintage shop on hawthorne for only 125 bucks, so we said ‘what the hey!’ and slapped a good old Sold sticker on it. we’ll be picking it up on friday, so i’ll get a before picture then (it’s an avocado green color, so i’ll have to paint it, but it’s totally worth it)!
we also bought curtains (well, fabric for curtains - they should be easy enough to bang out in an hour or so) - i’ll post a photo shortly of the pattern. i love the yellow (now i can FINALLY get paint to match!) and my theme is grey/yellow/birds/deer, so it works perfectly!
we’ve also decided to go with the montessori style nursery - i.e. no crib, cute art at eye level with the munchkin, lots of interactive, simple toys. i feel really good about this - it’s simple, cute and cheap! we’ve found a cute rug at ikea to put under the baby mattress so that if the munchkin falls off, he/she won’t land on hardwood flooring and we’ll be creating some really cool prints that we can change out from time to time to give the kid some variety.
tomorrow i’m 8 weeks and in 5 days, i get my first ultrasound! excitement!

the never ending search for the perfect yellow.

that is how many different fucking colors of different fucking yellow paint i have brought home in search of the perfect yellow for the nursery. i’ve cajoled, i’ve groaned, i’ve tried to convince myself that it’s not really too old lady or too neon or too ugh. but it never works.
now i’m on my way back to the paint store to pick up every fucking yellow swatch they have because, goddammit, i am going to find that perfect yellow. my light grey is perfect. my dark grey is perfect. i’m not gonna have some loud mouth yellow coming in and fucking up all the calmness in my room like a drunk frat boy at a chess club meeting.
here’s to the fifth try being the charm.

nursery design: initial design ideas
for awhile now, i’ve been thinking about nursery design and what i want. i know that i’d like it to be fairly simple and clean, with art on the wall that’s not necessarily ‘baby’ art and furniture that we can reuse for a second child or for the baby’s room as they grow.we’re not finding out the gender of the baby until he/she is born, so it has to be gender-neutral.
i’ve put together a primary design plot that pulls together a lot of elements i want: grey and yellow, birds, simplicity and cool/useful furniture. plus, the bell jar chandelier is just about as sweet as can be. i’ve already convinced hubby to make it, so that’s his next big project.
any items that aren’t grey or yellow or white (like the bottom of the crib) will be getting painted (i’m using Mythic Paint, which is non-toxic and baby-friendly) and will be able to be reused in the future.
all of the walls are the light grey and the trim is a combination of the dark grey and the yellow. i’m planning on making the ottoman myself, since i saw a tutorial on it awhile ago (so easy) and will probably find a used dresser and refurbish it as well. a lot of diy projects will probably be going into this (just remembered we need curtains!) which i am excited about - i love sewing and designing and working stuff out, so this is going to be really fun.
